How to make good taco

Written By Unknown on Monday, July 4, 2016 | 11:34 AM

There are tacos and then there are tacos. If you think of tacos as just a quick week-night dinner, not something to get excited about, then you’ve never really had a taco. Forgettable tacos are usually the kind that come out of a box, with a packet for seasoning and not much else. While there’s definitely a time and a place for this type of taco, they don’t do the taco any justice.

Real tacos are made with corn or flour tortillas (homemade being preferable) filled with the most amazing ingredients — think fried avocados, chipotle-rubbed salmon or duck confit — and topped with complementary accents like spicy salsas and fresh herbs. If you’re not convinced yet, make one of the recipes below and you’ll see what we’re talking about

Ingredients

  • 1 Tbsp. olive oil
  • 3 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 onion, finely diced
  • ⅓ cup tomato paste
  • 4 tsp. chili powder
  • 1 pound lean ground beef
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • corn or flour tortillas (about 8-10)
  • toppings such as lettuce, tomatoes, salsa, cheese, avocado, sour cream, etc.

Instructions
  1. Heat oil over large skillet over medium-high. Add onion and garlic and sauté until translucent, about five minutes. Stir in tomato paste and chili powder. Add ground beef, breaking up with a wooden spoon until cooked through. Add salt and stir to combine.
  2. Spray a small skillet with cooking spray. Place a corn tortilla on skillet and heat, flipping over once golden and toasted. Repeat with remaining tortillas. If using flour, place a few tortillas in a damp paper towel and heat in the microwave for 10 seconds or until warm.
  3. Fill insides of heated tortillas with meat mixture and add any toppings desired. Serve and enjoy!
